Fire Risks in Oil and Gas Facilities
Due to the nature of products and processes housed within them, the risk and impact of fires in oil and gas facilities can be significantly greater than that of normal combustible fire events. A few of the unique risks associated with these spaces are:
Flash fires: When flammable vapors in an unconfined area ignite. This is common during the transfer, spill, or leak of flammable liquid vessels.
Explosions: When flammable vapor in a confined area ignites. This is often the most devastating and destructive of all potential fire events.
Flammable liquid pool fires: When contained flammable liquid spills or leaks and is met with an ignition source, such as electrical equipment.
Boiling liquid expanding vapor explosions (BLEVE): When flammable liquids reach a temperature above boiling point and the container holding it fails.
Jet fires: When flammable liquid or gas ignites and escapes under pressure from a vessel.
Normal combustible fires: Typical Class A fires, which can still be plausible at an industrial facility — especially in offices and administrative areas.
Oil and Gas Fire Protection Services
Below are the three key industrial fire protection services our team knows best.
We’ll be your partner for all of your facility’s fire protection needs. Starting with a fire protection audit, our team will inspect your facility to identify any fire hazards, design challenges, and/or deficiencies in your current fire protection system.
From there, our NICET-certified design team will work with you to draft a comprehensive fire protection solution. Then our design team will take that design, source necessary equipment, and install it in compliance with local, national, and industry standards.
Learn MoreA defective fire protection system can elevate the threat of a fire tremendously, resulting in more destruction, downtime, costly repairs, injuries, and even deaths. Prevent this by being proactive in your approach to fire protection system inspection, testing, and maintenance. Our team can perform the required annual inspection and testing on the following systems:
- Foam chambers
- Fire pumps
- Deluge systems
- Flame detection and control systems
- Firefighting foam systems
The use of water in testing deluge systems can result in dangerous working conditions, damage to expensive equipment, and production shutdowns during testing and cleanup processes. That’s why our team is proud to offer patented SIRON dry deluge testing technology, which pushes vapor through your deluge pipework instead of water.
Dry deluge testing meets NFPA test requirements and results in similar, if not better, results while simultaneously reducing damage, downtime, and associated costs. As an exclusive SIRON partner, our technicians are some of the only ones in the country that are certified to provide this service.

In order to protect your oil and gas facility from a disastrous fire, it’s important to install adequate fire protection systems that are designed to prevent, detect, and respond to unique risks. Our technicians are experts in the following systems.
Dry chemical piped fire suppression systems are capable of suppressing the most expansive, ignitable oil and gas fires where water and foam suppressants aren’t a viable option. Common applications include truck loading/unloading racks, refinery processing, product transportation and storage areas, marine tankers, and more.
Fire pumps ensure high terminal pressure and large volumes of water. They’re a great solution in environments where a municipal water system can’t provide adequate water pressure to meet the requirements of a large fire sprinkler system. Common applications include petrochemical terminal truck loading racks, tanks farms, and more.
Foam fire suppression systems diminish Class B fires, including hydrocarbon fires and polar solvent fires. They coat fire fuels, removing the presence of oxygen, to extinguish fires. While incredibly effective, the most common type of foam suppressant, AFFF, is known to cause serious environmental and health hazards — PFAS being the most prevalent.
As our nation continues to put tight restrictions on AFFF, we offer safer, equally-as-effective solutions. Our team has extensive experience with providing the most current “PFAS-free” solutions available.
Flame detection systems respond to radiant energy, detecting the presence of flames rapidly. There are various types — some which detect radiant energy visible to the human eye, and others that detect radiant energy invisible to the human eye (e.g. infrared, ultraviolet).
Flame detection systems are an important first line of alertion and defense against fire hazards, protecting equipment and employees all the same. They’re used in virtually any application, industrial or non-industrial.
